A bunch of awful men try to get at a safe buried beneath Pablo Escobar’s former vacation home. Cari Mora, the home’s caretaker, is the only one who can help- or prevent them- from getting the gold.
I usually love Thomas Harris, but this one just wasn’t for me. A bit confusing at times, a lot of technical gun/weapon jargon. I liked Cari as a character and wish the book had focused more on her.

I long ago enjoyed "The Silence of the Lambs" but
this new one is nothing like that. It seems there
is information missing from the narrative for a
start. The story is super serious (depressing)
and there is not much to it, assuming you can
follow what is going on. Alot of players in this
one and not well defined. Then, it is quickly
ended, voila. Nope. Not good but thankfully a
quick read.

Dude just...just stay retired. The plot was...well, it was hectic and spotty. But the characters were ..well they were numerous and flat. EVERY single one. If this didn't have Thomas Harris' name on it, I never would have checked it out. Or finished it. But unfortunately, I did
Was mir an dem Buch gefallen hat? Die Leseprobe am Ende, zu "Das schweigen der Lämmer"
I've read words which meant nothing to me in the end. The setup was great. I thought a story of a migrant woman struggle and entanglement in high crime activities was very urgent to the social climate we are living in. But as the story progresses, it doesn't seem like a story of a migrant woman.
The ending manages to bring some tension, but the book is too slow for it to have a big impact.

It's been a while since I read The Silence of the Lambs and Thom bought me Cari Mora when he saw that it was Thomas Harris' new novel.
I don't even really know where to start. Cari herself is alright. Her story as a child is somewhat interesting and in my opinion would make a better story. Also, every character that meets her only views her as a sexual object, which gets tired really quickly. Instead, we're given Hans-Peter Schneider, a stereotypical villian. There's no depth to him, no depth to any of the characters really. His crew are so unremarkable that I can't remember who's who and as they get killed a new one comes along with another unremarkable name and description. The basic plot is that there is gold buried under a house that used to belong to Pablo Escobar, in a box that has been booby-trapped. It's a shame because it had the real potential to be a great story, but it was just... *meh*. I considered giving up several times and now that I'm finished, I don't really remember much of what happened. Stick with Hannibal.

Very very good. After writing the genre defining Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, it must be tough to be Thomas Harris. How can you possibly top those triple icons without doing what everybody has done since -- write a thriller that sounds like you're imitating Thomas Harris? His solution is to go off in a completely different direction and he did that successfully with Cari Mora. If you're looking for another Silence of the Lambs, you should re-read it. You're not being fair to Harris, who has the right to write whatever he wants. I hope this has broken his writer's block because I'd love to read his next thriller ASAP. If you can forget Harris wrote those three classics (how can you with the publisher's hype?) this is worth the read.
Wait... what!? That’s it?!?! I mean...where’s the second half of the book?!
It just...ENDS. LIKE- I was reeling through it and then ... it just ENDS.
I mean I know conclusions have never been Harris’ forte but I really was expecting a better conclusion than that.
There’s a villain that is sorely - abd I mean SORELY under-utilised. And he’s a good, creepy villain. But it all feels rushed. We even visit Quantico, briefly, introduced to brave new character Holly (for about 20 seconds) and then the story goes elsewhere... why waste great opportunities?
It feels like there were SO many (too many?) threads, SO many (too many?) characters... I was having trouble telling my felix from my Antonio from my Alejandro from my mateO from my Benedito... and I really wanted it to pay off in a grandiose way. It didn’t bother me that Lecter wasnt gonna show up, but to just waste so many opportunities just seems silly.
We get one book every decade or two, this just seems somehow weirdly unfinished. The worst part is it would have been so easy to introduce Lecter, even briefly, but more than anything there seem to be all these set-pieces or ideas that don’t really culminate. at times the writing is very confusing - had to reread many passages to clarify what exactly was going on...?
I feel like I was rushing to a goal, only to find out I was in the wrong direction the whole time. 3, maybe 3.5/5 because the disappointing ending and confused writing near the end.
