I found the book very difficult to get into, this may be because it is part of a series that I have not read. I decided to stop reading as I found it difficult to understand the main characters. It is well written and the plot is interesting so I’ve given it a 3. Maybe I’ll try to read the series from the beginning and give this book another go later.

In a lot of detective fiction these days there are the “by the books types” and the (often alcoholic) “issues with authority” types. In this book, they are paired to solve what seem to be a random murder by their boss, when he’s short staffed, because of the holidays. As happened in Lethal Weapon, or 48 Hours, the 2 don’t like each other at the start of the book. Unlike those films, team work doesn’t… foster togetherness?

It’s a pretty decent read. Of course Nesbo’s alcoholic “authority issues” cop makes all the breakthroughs (why would he be there if he didn’t?), but it rattles along at a good lick, and makes you suspend your disbelief while you read it.

A nice 5th entry in the Harry Hole series. Fast paced read, however, this time I found the crime plot twist a bit too soon for my taste. Still a great read nonetheless, since the story of this book plays a very important part in the character progression of Harry Hole.
