Oraya, a human child rescued by the vampire leader Victor, has lived her life in the House of Night under constant threat. She knows she is weaker than those around her, and is used to feeling like a victim. Victor has done all he can to train her and her one hope is to enter and win the Kejari. With this win she can claim a gift from the goddess and she hopes this will be enough for her to share the power of the man she calls father.
As soon as the competition begins Oraya sees what a difficult challenge she faces. Her hope lies with an alliance with the vampire Raihn.
From the outset we are drawn into what seems to be a classic enemies to lovers story. The tension between Raihn and Oraya is evident, but their success depends on them learning to trust one another.
The Kejari trial itself was repetitive. Bloodthirsty and brutal, but neither of our key characters gets harmed enough that they can’t be cured by a simple potion. While there’s little new here in terms of story, it draws you in and is a very hard book to put down.
In the background we sense something is taking place. Because our focus is Oraya, we don’t really know anything until the last minute. Though frustrating, it is necessary to explain her decisions.
I don’t want to give anything away but the closing stages hinted at something a little more complex. I’m not wholly convinced that this isn’t going to end up like so many other books of a type, but there’s enough to suggest I should reserve judgment and see what happens. At the very least I think I’ll be guaranteed an entertaining few hours reading.
