This book was really strange, but in a mostly interesting and compelling way. I enjoyed it until around the 75% mark and then it rushed through the story to wrap everything up in the unsurprising conclusion. It was good, I liked it, and I'm eager for the book club discussion, but it was disturbing (lots of discussion of rape and violence) and slightly bizarre and not at all what I was expecting.

Intensely dark. Had me from the first page. A quote from Oscar Wilde kind of makes me think of this book. "There is no moral or immoral books but there are bad or well-written books." The main topic involved in this book is indeed a sensitive one. But this writer and the way she wrote about it in this book was tragically and brutally honest. Every part of this story seemed necessary and not just to elicit an emotional effect in the reader but to help everyone understand the significance of this issue. And the brutal truths that come of it.

Even the part where Alex and Claire worked at the animal shelter. Although it was very hard for me to read those parts as my heart is just ripped apart when I hear about poor animals that are put into those situations and no one rescues them. But I find even that was necessary for the story and its purpose.

I really liked Alex and Claire's friendship. How it started and came to fruition.

The heavily dynamic characters and the storyline which escalates and escalates is very crucial to the strong and powerful message portrayed in this book. Rape is never okay. And it is unacceptable how easy it is for people to get away with it. There are no excuses for it. Men and women both shouldn't have to feel unsafe in the world because of this.

I am glad the writer wrote this book. It is a lesson to us all and I think everyone should read it.

I can't honestly review this very well, so I'm just going to point you to Wendy Darling's review, it is so much more accurate than what I could effectively say.

Captivating. Heart-wrenching. Read it.

Powerful and painful look at rape culture. The audiobook narrators for this one were spot on.

this book was so good. i have read many books that go into details about rape culture and such but the pov's transformed the story in many ways. i found myself reading a chapter and just thinking yes! that's right, isn't it? alex was so well characterized that it seemed like i could see her as a real person, talking to her and interacting with her. the way the issues were confronted were realistic and really appealed to our common sense. overall, a top notch book.

Mindy McGinnis’ words are magic. Each word was perfectly strung together with the next, telling a brilliant beautiful heartbreaking story that had to be told. Each character and their voice brought different perspectives to the same story. I loved every minute reading this book and look forward to more books from this author!

I like that the book was written from 3 different POVs. Well done but a little much for me. I have a low threshold for violence.

This was intense. Hard to put into words. Definitely worth a read.

This book was so freaking fantastic.

Following the story of a young girl who lost her older sister to a rapist in a small hick-ville town. This story is depressing and brilliant and not focused on any ONE specific life issue, but MANY. I enjoyed this so freaking much. Everything ties together in this twisted tale, where we discover who Alex really is, more so than the girl who lost her older sister, who found her remains buried in the woods, her body gnawed on by wildlife. More than the girl who is an A recluse student. More than the girl who volunteers at the animal shelter, watching people "dump" their pets they can no longer afford.

**I need to forewarn you - this plows right through rape "culture" - it is heavy handed and heart wrenching**

I highly encourage anyone who enjoys looking at the world from different angles and wondering "why", to pick up this book. I was lucky enough to have this recommended to me. Ate it up.

Please, enjoy!
