I like the content/message, but the writing isn't very strong. It's a kids book, without a real story, but there are other kids books that have beautiful poetry in simple messages. The illustrations are cute.

Such a lovely and important read that celebrates hair. I enjoyed the illustrations and various looks of the protagonist.

I received an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley.

Shrinkage is an incredible book for black girls everywhere about hair and the numerous styles black hair can do. This book belongs on every black girl's bookshelf and every household. The plot was amazing, the illustrations incredible and the theme relevant. Recommend!

Thanks to the publisher, NetGalley and the author for the complimentary copy

I liked the art style and how each page stood out.

The message of this book is really important, particularly for young black girls who I hope realise that they and their hair are special. It is certainly a book I'd give to a reception or Y1 class, or possibly use as a hook for a Y4-6 class to discuss issues surrounding race and identity.

However, although the message of this book is really important, unlike another of her books 'Curves Like Mine'. This book didn't really have a storyline, it was just a girl talking about her hair, why her hair is magic, and all the different styles she can put her hair into. However, I am a cis-gendered white woman so my interpretation will be different, so take my review as you will.

Rated: 3.5 stars

Also thank you to netgallery for giving me the opportunity to read this beautiful book.

If you've read Hair Love, you're going to enjoy reading Shrinkage. This book is a sweet, and beautifully illustrated, book about a young girl and her magical hair. She styles her hair in a myriad of ways that show that her hair is magic. Great for all kids, but as a curly haired (white) mom with a curly hair (white) daughter, we especially loved reading it. As my daughter and I read the book, we talked about which hairstyles would work on our hair, and which wouldn't, and about how amazing curly hair is.

While I think this book is beautifully illustrated, there wasn't much plot, so while we enjoyed it, it wasn't one that was requested for a reread. 3.5 stars for the topic and the illustrations though!

I was provided an ARC copy of this book through Netgalley. My thanks to the publisher and the author for providing it to me.
