I really wanted to like this book. I am not a huge Stephen King fan but everyone is saying that it is not his typical stuff so I forked over 16.99 for the kindle edition (how many books can I buy with that? I never by books, and if I do, it is typically less than 5.00) but...this is a great book right? Wrong! It was an okay book...it was a loooong book, it was for the most part a booorring book.It was full of endless and pointless details that some SK fans find adoring, I find it pointless. I kept waiting for the twist...it never came. I have spent over a month reading this book off and on and I can say that I'm relieved it over...I read it...been there, done that.

January’s commute-company audiobook, and I LOVED LOVED LOVED IT! I went in with completely wrong assumptions about the book (I had somehow convinced myself it was non-fiction!?!) but this was way better than I expected. The audiobook narrator for this one was also exceptional, and that only added to my enjoyment. I love an alternate history trope, but it was the characters in this one I really resonated with. Jake and Sadie were such lovely people, I feel like we’re friends now! And Al and Henry were great side characters, all set against an era of history I don’t know a whole lot about. A fantastic book, five extremely sparkly stars!!!

Is the past obdurate? Does it harmonize with itself? The answer to these questions are in this book ... about a million times. Never does Stephen King leave the instances of harmony or obduracy for the reader to decide, but rather has the main character tell us every single time. It made me feel like King thought I was too stupid to understand these things.

Other than this the book was actually very good. It was a rare King novel as it features a beautiful love story in the midst of his normal scifi-y adventure. Although maybe a bit too long, King fits an epic story into this "historical fiction" novel and keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen next.

The ending was perfect, in my opinion, and was the only way it really could have ended. The characters were amazing (as is King's strong suit)and I was sad to have to finish the book and see them go. I would recommend this book if you're okay with a long read and a sometimes sappy love story.
