This is a very intense book, so be careful going into it. It was masterfully done, and incredible creative memoir.

I'm not in the habit of giving non-fiction ratings, but in this case, the book deserves credit. Beautifully written and wonderfully research, all so Machado could tell her own story. This was difficult and emotional to read, but really worth it. I just wish I knew who to recommend this to. It's probably the kind of book that if you read the description and reading it scares you a little, give it a shot. But take it slowly, this is a hard read.

This is a powerfully written, researched and told story about Machado's experience and applied to the neglected discussion around domestic abuse in lesbian relationships. Throughout she writes in first and second person in lyrical and introspective ways that draw on cultural references from Star Trek to pop songs, but more commonly draws on allusions to the gothic horror books of the 19th and 20th century. The idea that a seemingly picturesque house is hiding something sinister inside is evocative and something I never saw used as a metaphor for abuse. But it is powerful. She also references academic rsearch and statistics and laws and cases and the perception of f/f relationships and women always being the victim.

This is not only a well written, beautifully done book but it is elevated by emotion and the importance of the discussion.

Carmen puts herself out there in this memoir. There seems to be a gap in people's beliefs that a same-sex relationship can be abusive. There has always been a gap in people's understanding that mental abuse is as harmful as physical abuse. Carmen did an amazing job of letting us inside her head and seeing the mental break down of her self worth and how another person can affect our mental health.

This book was absolutely heartbreaking and necessary. As Machado claims, queer people are people, and that means we can have every experience people have--which encompasses abusive relationships. Furthermore, her ability to understand and convey her own emotions shows maturity and introspection that is truly admirable. At first I anticipated not liking the speculative writing style, but it was very well done and effective for conveying her experience. Here are a few moments that I found incredibly profound (CW for discussion of domestic violence)
Her wishing her girlfriend had been a man so that people would believe her, so her experience wouldn't give the queer community bad rep
Her wishing her girlfriend had just hit her so she would have some concrete evidence
Her discussions of queer history and intersectionality, which showed the depth of research and thought she put into this book
Overall I really enjoyed this book, and I'm very glad to hear Machado is in a happier place now.
