It started out as boring. Unfortunately, I powered through. It slowly became more and more disturbing. Then it fizzled out with an anti-climatic ending. Overall, depressing. Trigger warning for animal abuse.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death
Moderate: Cursing
A really fun and un-pretentious read, I hope more writers draw inspiration from this.
Wonderfully ridiculous...this is not only quite funny, but it's original, unlike anything else I've ever read and not ridiculously long because at 172 pages, it certainly doesn't wear out it's welcome.
On the surface Treasure Island!!! seems like the perfect book for me. I love the original Treasure Island and I love books about girls finding power and pride within themselves. This book started with a flair of Franny and Zooey that I wasn’t completely expecting, but I did find interesting, and then it devolved into a book about an insufferable leech.
Even though the main character is the worst (she hates all people and is an animal abuser) I still enjoyed the story. I do wish the book had been about her little sister as she seemed like not a judgemental narcissist, but you can’t have everything.

I loved this book. Perhaps it will change my life if I follow its teachings. Probably not. Oh, this character is an asshole, but her life is a mess, okay? She's figuring it out! Or she isn't. She wants to be bold, she wants to live a great life, but shit isn't working out. People are disappointing. Parrots are disappointing. Characters rarely come this flawed. God, the things she does to the people who (HOW!? WHY!??) love her! I can honestly say I've never read a book like this. I don't know why it isn't more famous.
So very, very bad. Not particularly funny and the author could have done at least the minimal research of being around actual living animals before deciding to make them such a big part of her plot, e.g. when the protagonist is annoyed at a Flemish Giant rabbit (which generally weigh about 15 lbs) she picks it up by the ears and tosses it in its cage. Yeah, that didn't happen. Later, irritated by a parrot, she throws it to the ground and this hollow boned creature apparently suffers zero effects. These are minor issues though, the actual problems with this book are so numerous it's not worth the time to write about them.

I enjoyed this book. The bit about driving is pretty relevant to my own feelings. Would I want the main character in my life? Not particularly. But it was an enjoyable quick read.

It follows a young sociopath's attempts to use Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate adventure Treasure Island as a therapeutic tool to reign in her increasingly chaotic existence. It's a funny premise, and the novella is written in the style of an extended narrative comedy routine with undertones of darkly dry humor. Only Levine isn't really clever enough to pull it off. It's not bad overall, but if humor is the gum meant to stick the story together then it needs to contain more than a few chuckles here and there. Just entertaining enough to finish, but overall I kept thinking about switching to other writers who excel in this style of storytelling such as Julia Sweeney, Mike Birbiglia, or Rachel Dratch.
