Never underestimate the comedic potential of a character with supreme self-confidence and zero self-awareness.

The protagonist of Treasure Island is a modern day, real-world Smeagle, and just as he obsessed over his precious ring as he was--to the point where his appearance and lucidity rotted--so is Sara Levine's character obsessed with the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Treasure Island. At a loose end in her life, and freshly discovering what is termed a 'boy adventure book', Levine's character quickly adapts her life and personality to what she terms 'the core values' of of Treasure Island. Self and familial destruction follow.
While, at times, the only thing that pressed me on in Treasure Island!!! was a distinct sense of schadenfreude against the character--She is despicable in the sad way that shallow, obsessive, naive people can be--in the end, Treasure Island!!! is a nice novella, wrapped around a delightfully absurd (though not implausible) premise by an intelligent, humorous writer.

An interesting and uncomfortable book. It becomes clear relatively early on in the book that our protagonist and POV character is a bad person. She's Long John Silver or Billy Bones, but she fancies herself Jim Hawkins. This was an exhausting book - really, this woman's awfulness is suffocating - which is a credit to the author.
