It’s a Junji Ito story collection, so , ya know, it’s going to have stories that range from mediocre to freaking amazing! I think this would be a great one for someone new to Ito. I would say it doesn’t quite go as hard as some of his other work, but that’s fine. Most of his collections put the title story at the very end, so it was quite a pleasant surprise to find the title story for this collection at the very beginning, and it, Tombs had a really interesting concept.
Bronze Statue had a kind of Edgar Allan Poe/Alfred Hitchcock kind of feel to it. Floaters was good, and had a much more restrained kind of horror to it. The final story, The Bloody Story of Shirosuna gives the collection a big, gory conclusion. But the highlight of the collection, without a doubt, is the classic Slug Girl. The republication of this story in English has been a long time coming, and it was worth the wait, as it is truly a perfect example of Ito’s style: surreal, creepy body humor, fantastical happenings that are often treated casually by characters and never fully explained, and all of it beautifully drawn down to every disgusting detail. Highly recommended!
