I'm really loving books that surprise me in the way they're constructed. I started down this path when I read Magical Habits by Monica Huerta a couple of months ago. Ever since I"m finding books that are not the traditional narrative structure. In this case, Baer dazzles the reader in the way she finds poetry in terrible comments left by strangers on her blog posts/writing, or in the things that hit our news. Given a studious scholar of narrative turns (like what is the deeper meaning behind these words?) I love that Baer sees a different way of rearranging these hateful words. The poems are beautiful healing gifts instead of hateful ughs we live with in our world organized by sexism and racism. Her erasure poetry impressed me!
Brilliant. A wonderful collection of poetry written during the January 6th and pandemic era of American history. Baer is brilliant and creates moving poetry from unsolicited advice, trolls, and people who genuinely appreciate her point of view.
It seems that Kate Baer’s erasure poems are an established Instagram phenomenon that I totally missed. Hearing her read in audio the emails and messages she received and the way she transformed them into poems left me gobsmacked. Immensely powerful and beautiful results.
Cleaver, quick, and satisfying poetry whittled from online messages.

poetry was

holy shit, erasure poems are so fucking cool and kate’s are marvellous. i wish i could see blobs of words the way she does. my one small qualm is that her agenda is kinda “fuck men” which me bringing this up is literally against everything i’ve just read but still idk

I am not a huge fan of erasure poems as a style, but these were well done for the most part. I think the ones created from actual comments or messages the author received were more powerful than those taken from news stories. That said, Baer is truly talented. I prefer her traditional poetry, but that’s just my personal preference.
