A woman leaves the big city after her romantic relationship breaks up, she moves back to her home town, and (because people she knows there are suspects), she becomes involved in a murder investigation. That sounds like the first book in every cozy mystery series you've ever read.
Except...in this case, it's not clear whether a murder has been committed: neither twenty years ago, when our hero's sister disappeared, or just now, when another young woman, about the same age as the sister was then, goes missing. Also, the police are not total doofuses, and our hero and her lesbian buddy--who is just a buddy, not a love interest--are, sometimes (and her cousin, quite often). It takes efforts from both the professionals and the amateurs (also including a podcaster in town to make a series about the unsolved mystery from twenty years ago.
And in the meanwhile, we get a vivid sense of what it's like to grow up in a small town in northern Michigan where everyone knows everyone, and tourists are a necessary evil. It's the characters and the setting that made me round this one up from just good to "I really liked it."

i was not expecting to like this book as much as i did. easy read that draws you in! the ending left me wanting more and more. hopefully book #2 answers my questions
