I was generally liking this book better than the last two, but then there were some of the same issues. There was all this time spent fixing a hole in the previous book's plot that was so out of place and full of impossibilities and outright inaccuracies that it took me out of this book, too. Then the wrap up of this mystery felt very unbelievable to me again - I don't think the author did enough to build the relationships before the confession. Then the end - I couldn't make heads or tails of it. I wanted a clear ending, a happy ending, and I have no idea if I got it. I think if you're going to be so overt in the case portions, we could be overt in the relationship, too, which had been my favorite part of this book.
It was entertaining and I did get invested, but I just wanted more trust in the reader and actual building toward a guessable conclusion. There were jumps and missing plot points throughout, along with a theme of Watson having to be the one to sacrifice over and over again. I was hoping for a more satisfying resolution.

I really loved this series! This one defenitely wasn’t my favorite book in this series though. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this book too. I just think it lacked in suspense a bit. I was kind of waiting for big things to happen, but it wasn’t coming. However, having said that, I really love the character development in this one. The characters, especially Charlotte, were more written out and just represented for who they are, human.
I am so sad that this series is over now though...

as much as i normally can find some enjoyment in open endings, i'm just going to be delusional and assume there was a charlottejamie happy ending! chapter 24 can't stop me because i can't read!
i thought the setting of this book was super interesting (as a theatre nerd), but i thought the end of the mystery was a bit anticlimatic -- it felt like there was a lot of rising action and build-up only for like everything to be concluded in like five pages so it fell a bit flat for me :(
i also wish there were some other things that were wrapped up a bit more (like) but overall i thought this was a pretty solid conclusion to the series, despite the pain the last few chapters caused (the epilogue is helping me hang on by a thread)

I’M A WRECK
Charlotte Holmes has one of my favorite character arcs ever. And, uh, I've read A LOT of books so far in my life.

*3.5 i really don't know what to think. this was the second mystery in the series that i understood, and it really wasn't a particularly good one. it actually was very basic and much too easy. i liked the august twist i guess, even though resurection trope and stuff, but you know, guilty pleasures. i liked watson's and holmes' realtionship ver, very much in this one. i was sad in the end, but i somehow understood her. the ending was too open for me, i just don't feel satisfied, and there are just too many things about the cases in the former books that i still don't get at all and it drives me nuts. i really like how this series deals with trauma and sexual assult and mental health issues and grieving, but i don't like it's lack of racial diversity and the fact that every queer person's queerness only happens off-scene.
