this was an engaging read, especially because it was written in a conversational style. Hard to put the book down when the narrator is talking to you ...or more correctly to the person he's sitting with in Lahore!

An emotively written and masterfully crafted thriller more gripping than expected.

This book has reawakened in me my distaste for the jingoistic tendencies of many Americans, and my slight hatred for the U.S. military.

Unsettling, unpleasant, disturbing, inappropriate, but unfortunately very believable and perhaps needed. Can I recommend it? No, this is the kind of book that I wish I could forget. Do I regret reading it? No, but it is a story that unabashedly shatters innocence on multiple planes with a variety of arsenal. It's the kind of story that can open your mind, but probably not without tearing or cracking it. The writing style and first person narration was unique and a good choice for this kind of story, but it was difficult to get used to, perhaps intentionally so. I think the Erica aspect was intended to humanize Changez, but it had quite the opposite effect for me. The story was at times offensively intimate and at other times frustratingly superficial. NOT recommended for any reader below college-level. Troubling is probably the best way to summarize the experience.

To be honest, I had never heard of this book or author before. I was assigned this book for my one literature class in university so I picked it up. It was surprisingly entertaining and easily my favorite book we read in that course. Even though I found Changez a little off putting, I still loved hearing about his story. Also that ending?! WHAT WAS THAT!! I need answers.

ANYWAY! I didn't even realize that the author of this book also wrote Exit West which has been exploding on the internet recently. I already had that book on my TBR but now I want to get to it even sooner!

I would definitely recommend this book. It is intriguing and diverse and I believe it has the right to be noticed.

P.S. I plan on watching the movie some time this week. No idea if it stands up to the book though!!

The Reluctant Fundamentalist – 3.25⭐
A quick, easy read that leaves plenty of space for reflection. I appreciated the different perspectives and the way the novella invites you to fill in the blanks. I empathized with the main character, though some of the extreme views were tough to reconcile—even while understanding where they came from. Hamid’s writing style worked for me, and I’d gladly pick up another of his books.
