A young Pakistani, Changez, relays the story of his life thus far to an American in a cafe in Lahore. Changez describes his love for America, his contempt for America, his love life, his education, career and family. It was thought provoking to hear the story from the Pakistani side of the table and it provided me with perspective, which is never a bad thing. I am still contemplating the very open ending. I can appreciate the effect that an open ending provides, but I need closure. This is a literary piece from beginning to end. From the technique the author uses to tell the story to the names given to the central characters. [return][return]Thought provoking and brilliant.

The "having a conversation with the reader" style was interesting and seemed well suited for the story. It also provided an interesting means to make a number of points about bias.

This book came highly recommended. The premise is fascinating — all one conversation in a cafe in Lahore, Pakistan and all in the voice of one of the two men at the table. The tension building quietly throughout the book is tremendous, and it is beautifully crafted. If anything pulled this down from 4 stars for me, it was that I found the love story embedded in the larger narrative to be too far-fetched; it just didn’t seem believable, and that pulled me away from the story a bit. Still a very good read.
