This is a book I enjoyed immensely, from its unusual narrative style to the use of metaphor and allegory such as the relationship with Erica and the ever-increasing tension between the narrator and his guest.

A recommended (and short) read.

Disappointing. Characters not developed-didn’t care. Crude stereotypes. I wanted more from this.

Very fast read (one night ) but I'm not sure I liked the ending since it was very ambigous. I like closure

There are many things to like about this book: its brevity, its timely topic, its monologue format and great first-person voice. It's a joy to read.
But, there are some things that didn't quite work for me. I found the love story to be a bit too formulaic, and Erica, the female character, lacked weight. And while the cafe monologue worked in some spots, especially as a pacing mechanism at the open and close of chapters, it also struck me as awkward that this guy would be describing having sex with a complete stranger in a public place. And the shift from being a financial analyist stressing the fundamentals to a fundamentalist stressing over America's finances (a shift whose fulcrum was the 9/11 attacks), could have been better hashed out. And a more complete resolution at the end wouldn't have hurt the story either.

One afternoon read, poolside. Felt like a long chat with a stranger, who bared his soul to me. Lovely.

I liked 2 things about this book. The first is that it's one half of a conversation, so it is and isn't a monologue. The second is the critisim, or rather, the pointing out of behaviors by a different point of view. If we put pride aside we can learn so much from the way other people see us.
