Very nicely written and interesting but I'm not sure I get all the subtleties

I'm a huge fan of Hamid's writing and despite this book being in my TBR list, I picked up Exit West first last year.
TRF is the story of Changez, a young Pakistani, who is the first of his family to go abroad to study. The intelligent young man makes New York his home, and even lands the perfect job in a reputed firm as a financial analyst. At 22, he has everything, even a pretty American girlfriend but then 9/11 happens, and it changes everything. If you are an immigrant living in a different country, you'll understand Changez's turmoil and desperation. His need to get back to his own country, to his own people. Makes for a compelling read.

Fluent stream of consciousness. It was hard to put this book down. Once in the flow, you want to keep carrying on. A critical view on the US from a Pakistani citizen that passes from admiration at the beginning to bitterness in the end. Dreamy descriptions of Pakistan. I would recommend it, but would not necessarily read it again.

A quick and engaging page-turner, though I found the narrator's voice somewhat annoying.
