This book is strange yet moving and insightful. I enjoyed reading this, though I must say that all of the book’s side characters are somewhat one-dimensional and archetypal. However, this myopic focus does somehow give a dream-like quality to the story. The weakest part for me was the protagonist’s “love” story which felt unreal and a bit sickening (though I suppose the sickening aspect was intentional).
Despite this story’s heavy-handedness with its themes, I found the story compelling. The protagonist’s struggle not only regarding his identity but also his relationship with an ‘imperial’ form of capitalism were interesting to read and made me reflect.
I found the narrative voice engaging and interesting overall. This story is written accessibly and is a slim volume. I would recommend anyone living in the Western world, especially North America and the UK, give this a try.

I enjoyed the writing style/narrative and story. I passed it on to a co-worker who will hopefully find it interesting.
Supremely interesting and well told, but I'll have to think a lot more about the ending. Still, I'm very glad I read it.

i really like the way that this story was told. the format was interesting and i liked how the american remained unnamed
This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I've read a previous book of his called exit west a long time ago. As soon as I read the first few pages of this book i went back into my account and looked up exit west and it was by the same author. Thats how distinctive his voice is. The reluctant fundamentalist is a story about a Pakistani immigrant who to America to study at Princeton. After he graduates he gets a job at one of the most prestigious firms on wall street. He is epitome of an American success story. But as life goes on events occur which sends his life down a dark spiral. What is amazing about this book is the uncertainty of it. I can't say certain things as to not spoil the book but the feeling that you get while you read is unlike any other. He writes the side of the muslims and how they perceive the world with a believable character. You see America and the world through a different set of eyes and I think Hamid's perspective is an important one to see.
