I don’t know what to say other than I really hated this book. I love horror and I love Christmas, and unsurprisingly I am a huge of the niche Christmas horror genre, but this just did not land for me. The only “scary” parts of the book involved the sexual assault of women and that desn’t sit right with me. Especially considering this book was written by a man. The writing lacked depth and I think many passages verged more towards problematic rather than disturbing. I dragged myself through the book out if spite and hope for some improvement (which never came). I genuinely don’t understand all the love for this book.

This was my first book I've read by Joe Hill and it was quite good. I think there were some unnecessary horror tropes that the story could have been fine without and I wasn't thrilled with the blatant fatphobia surrounding Louis Carmody, but overall I enjoyed it and would read it again. I didn't know that the author was the son of Stephen King until after I read the book but it makes sense as there are several references to Stephen King books that I was surprised he was allowed to put in the story. Hill's writing style is also a bit similar to King's but you can tell he made it his own. I thought the characters were decent and there were a couple quotes that I'll probably be bookmarking because they were genuinely very good and insightful.

It was entertaining, it is short of 4 stars because I sense a lot of r/menwrittingwomen and the protagonist is a bit of a pick me girl. Some scenes I found too long and pointless. The last part pf the book is the best, especially the climax. And the world building is fine, if not a bit too convenient with its many plot holes. The dialogue could use some work, when done right, it is very realistic.

Racism, unnecessary descriptions of rape,  fatphobia, weird ableism, sexism, gory animal death, and Joe Hill just can not write women and refuses to stop trying. I love myself so I decided to stop before I got to far into the absolute tome of a book
