I was very happy when this new release dropped on my Kindle, and have been engrossed in it, as I am all of Cleeves mystery novels.
I get the feeling that we are seeing just a few minuscule cracks appearing in the sturdy and doughty facade of Vera, but I hope she has a few more cases left in her.
Most enjoyable.

Vera and a murder...what's not to love? This latest installment in the Vera series does not disappoint. I have so enjoyed watching the development of characters as this series has progressed. I highly recommend this series!

Now that’s a crime story! Starts well, drags you around the countryside and into people’s lives and crashes towards the end. Well drawn characters. Lots of coffee. No wonder the tv show is so good.
Lots of twists and turns as usual, and the murderer is never the most obvious.
3 stars
The plot is okay, though a little too slow to my favor. I think this is more suited as a cozy mystery read, more than the high-paced on-you-seat addictive thriller. While I'm not too picky about characters for crime books, some of the character's inner thoughts and actions tips me off. This does discount my feelings for this book. However, I must say the author does have a way of making the book engaging, enjoyable and smooth. I will check out her other series for sure.

The perfect vera story! Completely entertaining throughout!
I have enjoyed the tv series and hadn’t read any of the books. I’ve read from her other series’.
What others don’t like about this writing didn’t bother me. The portrayal of Vera as old, frumpy, marginally social and perhaps eccentric, was just part of the story. I did find Holly a bit trite and immature, but again, I just saw these parts of the story to be depictions of flawed people doing their work.
I’ll read others at some point.
This one, and I suppose the others may be as well, felt long and drawn out. So, I decided to listen to it as I hiked, did the dishes and wrote GOTV postcards.
I can’t comment on the writing style—with these books I don’t watch for that, I just attend to the story line. Nothing was overly bothersome as some have written about here.
