A good domestic thriller that got me out of my reading slump.

It was a fairly easy read and it kept me at the edge of my seat. Although I already saw the movie, reading the book gave me more insight about the character's thoughts. Would highly recommend this for those who would love to start reading thriller.

HOLY SHIT that was quite a book. i watched the movie 5-6 years ago, and i’m glad i didn’t remember the specifics.
this was SUCH A GOOD BOOK i don’t even know what to say.
when it’s revealed that the diary entries are FAKE i just knew i was up for a HELL of a ride. i knew the basics of the movie, and i wasn’t sure how it would pan out in the book format but it went SO WELL.

5 stars no wonder it’s such a good movie highly recommend can’t wait to read sharp objects!

A textbook example of enjoying a book, while disliking the characters. The story was just as good as I remember the movie being. Captivating despite me knowing the twist and ending. Now I need to rewatch the movie.

I appreciated how fleshed out every part of this book was - morality, the judicial system, marital problems, issues with parents, insecurity in self, occupation, economic status, etc. It’s medium paced because it has to be, there’s so much to set up!! Flynn’s characters are rich and complex, this book is a great morality conversation starter. I wanted to read this book unravel and it never does (in a great way!) each plot point is unique and predictable only in the sense that something WILL happen, we just don’t know what it will be.

I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY. TOTAL MINDF. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO FRUSTRATED. MY STOMACH IS EMPTY. MY HEAD HURTS. I HATE EVERYONE IN THIS (some more than others). BUT WHAT. I FEEL LIKE MY BRAIN IS INSIDE OUT. PLOT TWIST ASF. TWO COMPLETELY UNTRUSTWORTHY POVS. FUDJUSDHJDIDHDJDDJ. VERY DARK VERY TWISTED VERY TOXIC. I HATE THE ENDING. SO ANGRY. BUT I FEEL LIKE THATS THE WHILE THING. STILL I HATE IT AND IT WILL KEEP ME UP AT NIGHT WHICJ IS WHY I KNOCK IT DOWN 0.5.

**POSSIBLE ALLUSION TO SPOILER***
I DISLIKE WHEN AUTHORS MAKE ME FEEL BAD FOR PEOPLE AND THEN SWITCH TF UP. I FEEL CHEATED. BUT SHAIN THAT MAY JUST BE THE WHOLE POINT. BUT UGH. I DONT LIKE BEING WRONG.

Domestic thriller with unlikeable characters and unreliable narrators. Nick's wife Amy disappears the day of their five-year wedding anniversary. The police suspects that Nick is responsible, while he stands firm in his claim to innocence looking at any potential suspect who could have taken his wife.
My guess is that it, like with many thrillers, is best to have as little information as possible before the fact. The hype surrounding the film (and the book) meant that I had been spoiled on a few of the bigger twists. Luckily, the spoilers had been vague enough that it felt like it elevated the story for the most part. I knew what was going to happen, just not how or when.
The book really sucks you in, skilfully revealing just enough information to keep you curious, but not enough so that you see what will happen next. If you have an interest in psychology, this would be quite a treat. While the characters are unlikeable they feel infinitely complex, no action is unmotivated.
Some parts felt like they dragged on. Nicks character going on and on about childhood memories is one example. These lulls had a tenancy to feel repetitive. Really dancing in circles around the point we need to grasp to move on. There was also a theme between a lot of the characters of a general hate for all women. It does not feel as intrusive towards the end. In the beginning, however, the point that they all have a resentment for women became a little too hammered in.
Overall, thoroughly enjoyed the book.
