Definitely captivating from the start. I suppose I am not the biggest fan of this style of writing, almost stream of consciousness memoir. With that being said, I kept waiting for "something" to happen and although there were climactic moments, there was no one moment that defined the characters and their actions. Overall enjoyable, just not my favorite.
The book really surprised me by how it changes gears after 60% or around chapter 14. It ends up surprising you again and again. A delirious read. Loved it. Will read atleast one more book by author.
Having previously read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as well as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, I came into this book familiar with Hunter S. Thompson. I liked this book way more than the previous ones.

I’ve been a fan of Thompson’s writing since I first read and fell in love with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and I haven’t looked back since! I absolutely adore his writing style, it’s just so gritty and has this really spectacular punch. I think this book is my least favourite out of the three of his I’ve read so far but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t great! It was an excellent story and I felt like I was living an episode of Narcos as I was reading and I loved it. But I do have to deduct one minor star because I didn’t really feel anything for any of the characters and that’s always very important to me when reading!
If this book were a tv show it would make such a fantastic drinking game. Shot for everytime the word rum is used! :) In all honesty, this was pretty interesting.
For some strange reason, before I'd ever read anything of Hunter S. Thompson's, I knew I would love his work. Sure enough, I do. It's a unique style. I love his "I don't give a damn, I'm going to say how it is and do whatever I feel at the moment" prose.
The Rum Diary is exactly its title. There's 100% drinking involved throughout the book (most cases it was necessary), crazy people making crazy decisions and a sense of a foreign American dream. Wild, honest, and fast paced - but really good.

A little journalism and a lot of alcohol in late ‘50s Puerto Rico. You can definitely see the seeds of the later _Fear and Loathing_ in this.

'"Happy," I muttered, trying to pin the word down. But it is one of those words, like Love, that I have never quite understood. Most people who deal in words don't have much faith in them and I am no exception -- especially the big ones like Happy and Love and Honest and Strong. They are too elusive and far too relative when you compare them to sharp, mean little words like Punk and Cheap and Phony. I feel at home with these, because they're scrawny and easy to pin, but the big ones are tough and it takes either a priest or a fool to use them with any confidence.' - Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary
This is the first book I've read by Hunter S. Thompson, and I'm completely sold. I loved his style, and his ability to keep me interested in a story about nothing. I had a bit of an issue with the blatant objectification of women, however I'll cut him a little slack since it was written in the 60's. Looking forward to reading more of his work!
