“Kate kept returning to the phrase benefit of the doubt. She should give it to Dexter; he should give it to her. This should be in wedding vows. More important than richer or poorer, sickness and health, have and hold, parting at death. Benefit of the doubt.”

The enjoyment I got from reading Gone Girl led me to a recommendation of The Expats, which is also filled with deceitful spouses, secrecy and games of cat and mouse. In this book, most of the action revolves around ex-CIA agent Kate, her husband and another mysterious expat couple in Luxembourg that (like everyone else) seems to be hiding something. In comparison, I found this read to be exciting, but certainly not as gripping.

For me, it took a long time to get invested in this book. Since so many of the chapter’s short sections were neatly wrapped up with a clincher, I found it was hard to get momentum going forward when part of a story was abruptly ended and picked up elsewhere in time. Despite the confusing, jumbled storytelling, I was compelled to journey on with Kate, eager to see how her feelings of displacement in the world, as well as with the choices she’d made in life would be resolved.

Since granting the benefit of the doubt seems to come up a lot in the book, I’d give it three stars.

I listened to this on Audible for the long drive to and from college. The only issue I had was that since the book skips around from past events to present, etc, it was hard sometimes to know "when" the current chapters was taking place. However, if I payed attention, I could figure it out within a few paragraphs.
The story kept me glued to my earbuds to find out what happens.
