I am a Liselle Sambury fan! After the masterpiece that was Delicious Monsters, I had high hopes for this. Unfortunately, I just could not connect with this story. There was a lot of deeply rooted complex family drama. The layering of the storylines was intense and confusing at parts. In the end I “got it” but it was a struggle to get there.

This was a wild ride. Was so hyped reading this book that I had to tell so many friends about it.

That being said,  I still have sooo many questions that were never answered.  And the ending could have been better.

But it was sooooo much fun to read.

I rate books overall on enjoyability and vibes, and this book had both! And more!

I personally feel it was giving ‘Ace of Spades’ (a book by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé) vibes which I absolutely loveddd.

I lowkey wished the ending was more psychological, if you know what i mean. Still a lil bit confused on the milk man situation though.

All in all would definitely recommend this book!

After reading the Acknowledgements I definitely understood the premise of the book better and led me to give a better rating. This book seemed a little dark for YA, but was still good nonetheless. The whole-dun-it was a good twist because the author threw the scent off of whoever the reader kept thinking it could possibly be or the circumstances surrounding the plot.

This is my second read by Liselle Sambury, and she can do no wrong in my eyes at this point! Tender Beasts is an amazing story filled with murder mysteries and suspense. Liselle does such an amazing job tying in issues of racism, classism, family trauma and generational curses. I definitely recommend!

For the length of the book, there were a few small holes in the story that I feel should have been filled, hence the deduction in stars. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is an amazing book!

*Not to compare the two, but I do prefer Delicious Monsters over Tender Beasts. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it as well.*
