It’s interesting reading reviews insisting that the only interpretation of Luke is a trans man because, as a cis woman, I related heavily to her circumstances and would do the exact same thing and behave in the exact same way as her if I was in her situation. Nothing is more unappealing to me than being trapped in 1850s female gender roles and, if given a chance, I absolutely would have opted out. Which doesn’t make me trans—it just means that I want more options than the extremely limited ones afforded to women.

Anyway I think the bigger critique of this novel is the casual racism that pervades the narrative. Was the scene where an indigenous man tries to barter for Nora because she has red hair really necessary?

I was on a sapphic, historical fiction kick so I jumped into this one without reading much about it. I should have, though, because I would have avoided the young child and pregnancy tropes; not a huge fan of those, so reader beware.

Aside from that, I found the story and slow evolution of the love between the two main characters completely understandable in the historical setting. A marriage like a business transaction with benefits to both parties; forced proximity at it's best. A genuine love developed between the characters and this was very well portrayed.

One thing I found a bit distracting was the use of pronouns. One of the main characters identified as a man and preferred he/him pronouns. Yet, throughout the story, the pronoun choice flip flopped from he/him to she/her. I tried to find a pattern to it; like if she was thinking about herself, the pronouns were she/her, but if her wife was thinking about her, she used she used he/him. Conclusion: I couldn't find the pattern!

I did not read this two times, goodreads is just weird.

I am currently having a lot of feelings about this book, i could cry at any time.

I was completely obsessed with the concept of the book and was really excited. I started reading and cried everytime Nora and Luke interacted.

Around page 350-400 I did get annoyed at  but when i reached the end, i understood, and I loved it and it was great.

The everyday interactions between the travelers, Nora and Luke, and Luke and Amy were great, so the 2-7 day time-jumps did hurt my heart, but I obviously understand from a writers perspective.

This Uber Xena story has all of my favourite fanfiction tropes (fake marriage, strangers to friends to lovers) and a very interesting cross-dressing genderqueer lesbian narrative that made me smile a lot. The book's treatment of Indigenous people and sex workers is... honestly completely unacceptable by today's standards, though I suppose the racism and whorephobia in general could be characterised as era-appropriate. From a historical fiction perspective, I'm not enough of a historian to give a proper opinion on that, but I have to say that while the setting "felt" correct, a lot of the dialogue by the middle and latter half of the book between the two main characters felt jarringly modern. Anyways, that's my two cents, and in my opinion racist portrayals of Native American nations is not something a reader should have to surmount to enjoy a book.
