She wished she could have told him that life was already full of dread, no matter who you were. That there was nothing you could have that you couldn’t one day lose. That autumn always gave way to winter, but it was her favorite time of year—those fleeting bursts of beauty before the branches went bare.
This was sad, and lovely, and filled with breathtaking layers of grief: for those we've lost, for the losses we've yet to face, for the pain we've inflicted upon the only Earth we have, and for the pain assuredly yet to come to this brilliant planet. I adored this tiny little seedling of a story, even if it hurt.
Moderate: Death of parent, Death, and Grief
Minor: Cancer, Suicidal thoughts, and Suicide

Thoughtful, compelling, and insightful, this very brief short story involved Samantha: a scientist amongst the last on Earth before an asteroid hits.
Samantha is in charge of categorising and recording Earth's plants for the future of the now evacuated humans, making an impactful and beautiful discovery before the scientists are set to evacuate, just weeks before the asteroid hits.
This short story, written by Divergent's Veronica Roth, provides a sort of reflection into what means most to you. Despite the ending being slightly underwhelming, it was surprisingly detailed, well developed, and thought-provokingfor such a short book. I do wish there was a little more to the story's conclusion, but Ark is, in my view, an enjoyable, quick read, worth an hour of a sci-fi reader's attention.
