The cover is absolutely stunning and that’s what really drew with me in. Luckily the inside was just as beautiful as the cover. The world felt very fresh and I don’t know Korean mythology so I was intrigued the whole way through. It gave me Studio Ghibli vibes which is high praise from me. The world, the atmosphere, the pacing, characters, everything is fantastic. I loved the sea god and the spirit realm.

I throughly enjoyed this book and the way I felt reading it. It was recommended to me since I like Studio Ghiblis” Ponyo”. I felt like it gave me all the feels most of the SG movies do. Little details could connect different movies but it is not a rip off of a movie or anything I believe helped to inspire one of the movies. I think I’d love it just as much even I had never seen the movie that had lead to the recommendation. I enjoyed each of the characters. I loved the courage of the main character and the exciting events that happened based off one choice she made. I’d recommend this book to others who want a warm and cozy but exciting book.

There is a lot going on in this retelling of a classic Korean folktale, maybe too much. Oh weaves an intricate tale but at times the packed plot interrupts the flow of Mina’s quest. The people believe the Sea God has cursed them and to appease him, a young girl is thrown into the sea as an offering. Honestly, I loved the last few chapters a lot but to get there was a bit of drudgery.
