I really enjoyed this, the flaws of Mr. Rochester were so colourful and entertaining, and Jane’s character was surprisingly complex. Jane was given a voice and agency that was apparently quite revolutionary for the time. It’s easier to enjoy if read considering the context of the time - as though you were reading it at the time it was published, to truly appreciate it and understand it’s impact. Also, a bit of benefit of the doubt doesn’t hurt either.

On Rochester’s character:
Rochesters treatment of his wife receives copious amounts of criticism, but again, considering the time and the lack of understanding around mental illness and misinformation on female ‘hysteria’, it’s difficult to judge. Also considering Rochester’s actions were quite above and beyond what would have been considered ‘normal’ for the time, as well as his apparent attempt at risking his life to save her… It’s easy to write-off his actions as abusive, but I believe it discredits the intentions of his character. Not to say Bertha wasn’t mistreated, but  the context of the time suggests more complexity and demands more rigorous analysis

On Jane’s character:
The fact Jane was able to leave Rochester was unexpected but much appreciated, making their problematic relationship more tolerable imo. To me it showed she had strength of character and wasn’t acting due to manipulative efforts, and so when she returned to him it was by her own volition. Whether people with modern sensibilities agree whether she should have or not, the idea she was making a choice clear to herself and acted confidently in that direction was inspiring. Her discovery of family was also appreciated, not just because it was so rewarding to see her get what she had so desperately wanted, but because she no longer needed a man to fulfill that void, again making her affection for Rochester more legitimate. She could also clearly hold her own against him, and she seemed to really enjoy his nonsense. In the end, I’m pro their romance and enjoyed the book.

Quite a bit of humour and silliness in it, which I also enjoyed. Also, the angst and symbolism were satisfying as well.

I wasn’t an enormous fan of this novel. It was okay but the traditional story line just really bugged me especially at the end. I enjoyed the first half a lot more because it almost solemnly focused on Jane and after that it was basically just about the love story aspect.
*I read this books for uni which meant I did like to read about the typical aspects of romanticism but it wasn’t something I would’ve picked up myself because I just can’t take the cringe of live stories.

I enjoyed it! A classic Victorian bildungsroman but all the characters were well-rounded and with distinct personalities.

Jane Eyre is often sold as the best book of the Brontë Sisters and while historicaly it did had a great impact in literature, I did find this book really overrated and I do not belive it should be sold as a "feminist" book.

The book starts pretty great, the story about the poor orphan Jane Eyre that lives in a abusive household with her cousins and aunt that is send to live in a private orphanage. The begining is interesting and shows how Jane's personality is build by her experiences in childhood.

The problem in my opinion istarts a  little after she goes to Mr. Rocherford's house, her relationship with him is really "bland" with her often judging everybody she know but don't actually caring about what others think about her until it cames for Rocherford. She ultimaly shows a need of validation by him even ftom the begining of their meet, while she often says that "they are equal"

Another problem that made me dislike this book is the plots, I dare to say that the book has four major plots, and I was able to guess three of them really fast and really early in the book, what made me think that the book is a lot predictable.

Is not a terrible book, but it's I do believe is not the best book of the Brontë Sisters, and overall is not the best classic romance book.
