I’m not sure what I expected going into Fly Away, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for how heavy it would get. if you haven't read FireFly Lane, you could definitely go right into this book. This sequel dives deep into grief, family trauma, and the complicated ways people cope with loss—and it does it all with honesty and heart.
The first part of the book is filled with raw grief after Kate’s death. It’s emotional and intense, but it makes sense given the circumstances. Then the story takes a darker turn, especially when exploring Dorothy/Cloud’s past and how it shaped Tully’s life. The connection between their trauma and Tully’s choices—particularly with drugs and alcohol—was hard to read at times, but it added real depth.
⚠️There are some strong trigger warnings (r*pe, s*xual abuse, substance abuse), so keep that in mind going in. Overall, this was a powerful and emotional read. Not easy, but worth it—especially if you're invested in these characters after Firefly Lane.

While I enjoyed revisiting the characters I so thoroughly loved in Firefly Lane, I didn't love the way this book was written. It jumped around a little too much for my taste-and while it showed a few people's "POV" it said not much about Johnny, which was annoying to me. It also felt a little like it was predictable in the ending.

This is novel is a continuation of Firefly Lane which I read about 10 years ago. I wish I had read it closer to the first book because I think I would have connected with it better. But I did remember bits and pieces of the first as I read this one. It was a heavy read with a lot of difficult and tragic things. Definite trigger warnings for physical and sexual abuse, abandonment, drug and alcohol addictions, self harm, and loss. But it was a beautiful story of real life, redemption, unending friendship, and the power of love and family.
