The whole Stockholm syndrome thing was cringe-worthy for me.

This is my first book by Sandra Brown. Emery is a pediatrician and runner. She and her husband (who is cheating on her) have a big fight and she leaves to go trail running to train. She wakes up in a cabin in the middle of the woods with a huge bloody knot on the back of her head with a strange man who won’t tell her his name. Creepy, huh? They’re trapped together as the mountain is fogged in, and Emery is creeped out to say the least, assuming creepy stranger is the one who attacked her. While she’s been missing for days, her husband Jeff, who’s been busy with his mistress Alice (Emery’s friend and co-worker, nice) while his wife has been away, has not bothered to call the authorities. Which only makes him look that much more suspicious. What’s really going on, who attacked Emery and who’s to be trusted? I liked the pacing in this one. It took a while at first for reveals to start to happen and the story to start to unfold, but there were plenty of side plots going on so I never felt like the story was dragging. 4/5 stars.

Whew. I didn't pick up on this one until the very end. All the characters are great, and I really loved that we did get a romance with this suspense filled ride.

3.25/5 stars. I almost liked this book more than I did, but Brown's writing style is a little OTT for me. I am not opposed to a little romance in the books I read, but this book veered into cheesy Harlequin Romance territory, and I could definitely have done without the graphic cringe-worthy sex scene towards the end. Sometimes, less is definitely more. Also, while I generally liked the story line, I was a bit uncomfortable with how Brown rushed the main character's feelings towards her "rescuer". It felt a bit like she is encouraging the concept of female rape fantasies. She is being held by a stranger and is worried he might sexually assault her, but wait...he has rugged good looks and unusual blue eyes. Really?
