‘Again he fell into that strange mood of speculation that was so foreign to him. If faces were different when lit from above or below—what was a face? What was anything?’

i read this as homework for yellowjackets season 3 and i didn’t really like it unfortunately. i was hoping i would but maybe lord of the flies is one of those works who’s impact is more important than the work itself. every now and then you get beautiful lines but it’s in a lot of meh. probably one of those works better read at secondary school to debate its themes in a group?

I read this book because at the school I work at, we were going to read three chapters with the students and discuss topics from the book. That meant it was finally time to read this 'classic'.

Being written in 1953, I didn't expect the language to be modern. It was also meant for an adult audience at the time, not teenagers. These two factors probably made the book a bit more difficult for me to read, and that is one reason I didn't enjoy it much. I had to focus on the sentences, but I found myself distracted by other thoughts every so often. It was like my brain wasn't ready for this book.

While I didn't much like the way the sentences were written, and I had to look up a few words, the topic of the book is interesting to think about. If we civilized humans were stranded on a deserted island, would we stay good or turn evil? The book explores a few possibilities in the different characters.

This sort of sits as either a 3 or a 3.5 and I can't really decide which. Horrific book, on purpose. Stressed me the hell out, but sort of oddly compelling. Like a train wreck. Or, I suppose in this case, a plane crash that you can't look away from.
Never been so relieved to see a marine in my life. I was starting to fear this would be an incredibly bleak ending. Hope the remaining boys have rich enough parents to afford to the insane therapy bills they're going to need. Wish I didn't have to say "remaining."

Oh, and everyone complaining about Piggy in reviews seems to have missed the point. Or, part of it. Kind of disappointed there's so many. Y'all must still be in school or something. Give it a few years.

I was assigned to read this book in 2020 for my year 9 English class, and as expected, I didn't read it. Finally, after 5 years, I decided to give it a proper chance and I'm happy to say I liked it. The beginning was a bit sluggish but the final 3-4 chapters were amazing.

William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”  is a powerful allegorical novel that explores the thin veneer of civilization and the descent into savagery. Through haunting imagery and symbolism, Golding delves into themes of power, morality, and human nature, showing how societal structures can collapse in the absence of order.

The characters, particularly Ralph, Piggy, and Jack, represent different facets of human behavior, from reason and intellect to primal aggression. The unsettling atmosphere and thought-provoking narrative make it a gripping read, but its dark portrayal of humanity’s potential for violence leaves a lasting impact.

The intro and afterword were unintentionally hilarious. Seemed a lot like he was trying to head off arguments. I see why this book has been so impactful. The author capture’s a child Ms voice well.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. I just read it because I never have and know it’s considered a classic
