This was an important book to me as a kid but boy did it not stand up to closer scrutiny.

It's a Gen X vision of the future, and it's kind of fun for most of it, but there's some big flaws

The ending felt super rushed, and chaotic, and hard to follow as it moves all over the place. This explains why I literally never remember how it ends despite reading it three times

But the biggest flaw is with how YT is treated on the raft.
there's no way to say that she slept with Raven consensualy. She's 15. She's trapped and can't leave and Raven is clearly capable and willing to be extremely violent. And her being underage seems unimportant to the plot. She could easily have been 18, which would help a little bit make the scene less gross

I just reread this book after decades, and enjoyed again the hyper cool dystopian world building. But. As a parent of young adults I found elements of the character of Y.T. a major downer.  Like did the author ever meet a 15 year old? The character is preternaturaly expert at everything she does, including sex with a monstrous man at least twice her age.  Basically a  spophmoric male fantasy trope. I'm glad so many current sci fi writers are moving past that stuff now!

Couldn't look past some pretty problematic passages, and wished some parts could have been written more leanly. Moreover, ending was too abrupt and ambiguous, but otherwise a fun romp with some really interesting story ideas

Great book. I'd absolutely recommend Snow Crash to anyone who is interested in cyberpunk, as this book is basically THE original cyberpunk book.

As others said, the ending is a bit lackluster and Deus Ex Machina, but it still didn't leave me disappointed after finishing the book.

The plot itself is confusing at times, but generally really interesting. People who like fast-paced action stories will probably love it. The book also has good worldbuilding.

I didn't really get the "metavirus" stuff but it was still interesting.

Wildly disappointed in the book, it started off strong with a great setting and characters that should be memorable but the book fails to resolve any of its major plot lines. Leaving one of the two main protagonists in the middle of a precarious situation with no inkling of how they get away from it, and the other watching the last conflict from the sidelines. The book has a multitude of great plot hooks that are utterly forgotten when they become less than convenient to resolve.

Lastly the coerced intercourse between the 15 year old female protagonist and the violent 30-some odd year old antagonist that the author attempts to describe as a relationship is difficult to get through.

The book might have been formative to the cyberpunk genre but is certainly not the pinnacle of it. If I could go back and skip it I would.
