I wanted to love this so bad. The premise sounds beautiful and I know if I wouldn’t be so busy in life I would be touched as much as the other five star reviews were.

Unfortunately this was the right book, read at the wrong time which sucks because I could never read it for the first time again without a bias. I had a hard time getting through it. I did not care for the people or anything happening. I can’t remember a lot of things and I’m devastated.

***These are my random thoughts after finishing the book. Some of the thoughts are an overall review of the book, or any questions/feelings that nagged at me throughout. There will almost definitely be spoilers. Read at your own risk.***   ‐----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quiet book about love in the golden years
Gene why

No a huge fan of this book. The writing seemed choppy and I felt disconnected from the characters. The ending was especially horrible and didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the boom. However, I did love the theme and simplicity of the story.

This moving tale of love in later life is written in a far simpler style than even the author’s sparely written trilogy Plainsong-Eventide-Benediction. But it was written so quickly as he was dying that it needs to be taken in that context. And I have witnessed the truth of this book growing up in a small town and seeing new friendships take root with older people, the destructive gossip and supportiveness, the troubled family relationships, all the way down to the details of the meals shared. So sad to know there will be no more from Kent Haruf.

I loved this book so much. The characters are interesting, the voice is strong, and the story is poignant and thoughtful. I will continue to think about this one.

A beautiful love and companion story between a lonely, elderly (is mature a better word) couple. They have to navigate their relationship through the memories of their deceased mates, family and neighbors, and their own past.

Through this story, I find it interesting to compare and contrast a budding mature relationship with a budding young relationship. One more focused on the past and present and finding something familiar. The other focused on the future and finding something new.

First read from this author but I’ll definitely be reading more. This was just a sweet read about relationships and choices about how we want to live our lives. Heartwarming story that I happen to have read at a time when heartwarming was what I needed.

Very touching simple story. Very quick read.

The first Haruf novel I've read, and I really liked his style of writing, so I'll definitely be reading some more. It was the story that made me not love it - it just wasn't strong enough for a novel (or a novella as this probably is) - more of a short / long story sort of thing. An old man and an old woman come together to find comfort in each other's company. One of the things that didn't work for me was that nearly the whole town was outraged, their adult children were outraged. Really? Maybe I'm not familiar enough with small-town America. I can understand gossip, but outrage? I'm not sure.
