Gosh this is such great writing, the prose is great and at times reads like the best of 'literary' fiction ( just reminds me how great the quality of writing is in the crime genre), the history described is brilliantly done (here the treatment of black Americans in the southern states with dreadful descriptions of killings based on factual events) , and ultimately of course skillful plotting that had me rapidly turning the pages.
This fourth in the Charlie Parker series is a companion piece to The Killing Kind, with Charlie having to face the continuing threat of villain reverand faulkner from that book. When he gets a call from an old lawyer friend in south carolina to help in the defence of a black boy accused of killing a white girl he is drawn into the sinister world of white power, the klan, extreme religion, and financial power. As ever with Louis and Angel behind him mayhem ensues whilst back home in Maine Rachel faces risks which Charlie cannot control.
A great read and in 2020 I will definitely be reading more of these brilliant books.

LOVE these characters, the detailed and well-developed plots, and the amazing writing. SO glad I've finally found the Charlie Parker detective novels! Such an interesting reflection on race relations - especially relevant still today, twelve years after publication.
John Connolly is a genius! Love his style of writing and his books always get me hankering after the next one.

This series manages to improve with every new book I read. This one was absolutely captivating from start to finish. I love everything from the writing style to the way the characters are handled, including how the supernatural creeps in more and more. Really enjoyed this and will definitely be reading the next one (very) soon.

Oké verhaal. Had het waarschijnlijk beter gevonden als ik ook de vorige boeken had gelezen. Kon bij vele dingen niet volgen doordat ik de rode draad miste.
