“You know anything about investigative work?"
"Sure. Annoy the people involved until the guilt party tries to make you go away.”

Giving this series another go, as it happens, especially since so many people keep recommending it to me.

It is a first instalment, and as I have been warned, not the strongest. We get a first glance at this world where magic and technology alternate, with all matter of shape shifters, vampires, and pretty much everything in between. Kate is a compelling character, full of light and shade, and snark, a lot of snark :0) The plot wasn't bad either and introduces us to the various factions/players while featuring some pretty mad action scenes.

I did enjoy it, truly, but I still prefer the Hidden Legacy books better. I can already imagine the daggers thrown at me... It’s just that I connect more with that kind of urban fantasy. Also, I miss all the interactions between the Baylor family. I know, I know - this is probably going to develop here too.

This was a great start to the series and I can't wait to continue with it!

This was SO boring. It took me months trying to get through. Romance readers on every platform gave the whole series a high rating, agreeing it has a weak first book but it gets better. I'm glad I took the recommendations and stuck with it. I love the series! Just not this book.

4.5⭐
It turns out as one of my favourite novels of Urban Fantasy, dark, action-packed, addictive. I love the characters and their evolution. Even one particular character that 'cause of his appearance u should feel scared, I mean he is a monster, his circumstances, the way he behaves, I felt close to him and sad about him being attacked.
Kate Daniels is a bad-ass but it's not perfect, she knows her weakness and ask for help when in need, she has friends and for those new friends out of her inner circle will do what needs to be done. I also enjoy that not everything turns out OK, she makes mistakes more than once (I feel that lately for many main characters in fantasy everything turn out OK too quickly and easily).
I really like Derek, when she entered the Pack for the first time

DID NOT FINISH: 17%

DNF @ 17%. I’m not sure what it was, I just couldn’t get into it. The dramatized audiobook seemed like it would be good but it just wasn’t for me.

This series kept being recommended to me. It was a slightly slow read, though it did keep my attention long enough to be finished. I like Kate, and I think she is a great character in that she seems to have flaws as well as skills. I like the world building and Saiman, and I will likely read the next book. Partly because this one was decent, and partly because someone else wrote not to give up on the series until after the next book.

My read had a couple of scenes from the Beast Lord's POV. I didn't think they added much to the story to be honest, but maybe I would have enjoyed them more if I was already a long time fan.

Second time through:
Since I've read the whole series, I obviously wasn't as confused with the world building here. The problem is, I just think this book is a bit of a mess. The series definitely gets better starting with the next book, and then just continues to go up, but even knowing and loving this world, I just really don't love this first book.

First review:
I liked this, but it felt like it was not the first book in a series. Like it was at least the second or later book. There wasn't really a whole lot of good worldbuilding. I don't need to be spoon-fed details when I read, but I would at least like to be introduced to a world, instead of just thrown into it.

There definitely was some interesting things going on here, though. So I will continue on with the series.
