This is a fun concept with some execution problems. I would like to see the world fleshed out more, although with how many books there are in the series I guess it'll happen.

Am I the only one that finds characters that try to be quip-y all the time tiresome? I'm not a huge fan of Kate; she feels like a character written by a high schooler.

A solid urban fantasy. I prefer the Burn For Me series so far, but it is intriguing enough that I will continue.

The writing style was just kinda corny? And then I found out this book apparently had like 30k words slashed out of it by the publisher and that fans recommend just starting with the second book, so I will be doing that!

This was really dated. In Kate Daniels, Ilona Andrews wrote a classic early 2000s strong female character, who is really not like other girls. The first half read like a prequel to something, but maybe Andrews got bored with her own meandering plot, because suddenly we have constant battles and a villain. It felt disjointed; the writing was basic but not basic enough to understand the flow of a battle scene or the differences between shapechangers. Every time they tried to do something poetic or metaphoric with the prose, it was not great. The whole time I wanted to pick up Nora Roberts's early Eve Dallas books to find out if they were as bad as this one. Keep in mind, besides the plot and the main characters, the language they use is also incredibly dated; sometimes it seemed a bit insensitive.
