first of all, no one /gets/ london's vibe quite like nelson. small worlds is definitely more layered and sophisticated than open water from a purely narrative standpoint, but to me it lacked that hitting-like-a-train quality that got me obsessed with open water. i still loved this - nelson's writing is so lyrical and delicate and real, touching on generational trauma, migration and police violence in the midst of love and romance and freedom.
