🌊 My Friends by Fredrik Backman 🌊

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Few notice the three tiny figures on the pier in one of the world’s most famous paintings—but Louisa does. An artist herself, she's determined to uncover their story.
Decades earlier, four troubled teens—Joar, Ted, Ali, and a gifted but troubled young painter—find solace on that same pier. Their summer of friendship and dreams inspires a masterpiece.
Now, with the painting in her care, Louisa sets out on a journey to trace its origins. Along the way, she uncovers not only the story behind the art but also her own creative voice in this moving tale of friendship, loss, and the healing power of art.

Wow. No review could ever come close to capturing what this book was. This was one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I have ever read. I got about 50 pages in to the copy I had taken out from the library before I had to buy a copy so I could highlight parts of every single page. This book, in true Fredrik Backman style, was absolutely incredible. It was emotional, the characters felt so familiar and real, and the plot kept me invested throughout the entire book. This is definitely one of his best pieces of writing yet, and I was emotional the entire time. Before I finished, I had bought 2 additional copies for people I know, and think everyone needs to experience this story.

Read this if you like:
  • to cry
  • emotional stories
  • unexpected friendships
  • existentialism

Backman can write about childhood friendships like few other authors I've read. You get the same feeling as watching The Goonies or another movie that reminds you of summer days spent outside with your crew, doing nothing and everything at once.

This book started out much darker than his other books have started, I think, and his voice with the characters was more judgey than his observations typically are. I noted that he referenced a body guard's weight as being 300 lbs EIGHT times during a scene. Unnecessary and uncreative.

For me, the story picked up about one third in where I become more invested in the reveals that Backman is known for. He portrays love and commitment in really beautiful and complex ways with this story.

i'm so glad i loved this book because i've read previously from this author a book called "the answer is no" and i gave that one 2.5 stars but this one really did it for me!

the characters were all super distinctive and unique in their own ways and the humour between them was honestly top notch lol. i loved how sarcastic they were with each other cos that's the type of person i am.
they also reminded me a lot of the book "a little life" by hanya yanagihara. the unwavering friendship/lovership was so sweet. at times it was also a bit depressing but also moving at the same time.
i don't think i had a particular favourite character, i loved them all. louisa was a tad bit annoying sometimes but that's pretty much it lol. i did appreciate art though because he never cared for the material things and that's rare. ♡

the writing style was also phenomenal, it sucked me right in and i flew through the chapters. i loved how humorous it was and at other times thought provoking.

even though i wasn't too fussed about art, this plot line was still interesting to follow. just something about it... i wanted to know more. however, it did get a bit repetitive as i read more. the "tomorrow" thing also got old real quick lol.
fear of men talk was so valid though.
this book got me wishing the artist and the others were alive irl, they felt so real and comforting!

honestly if you love art or just want a thought provoking, a little sad but also sarcastic book to read - this one might be for you. i thoroughly enjoyed it and now i can't wait to read more from fredrik backman!

Fredrik Backman has a unique ability to convey the spectrum of human emotion so precisely. Everything he writes is amazing, this is no different. Gut punch after gut punch, but ultimately hopeful.

This was a beautiful book! True to Fredrik Backman’s previous works, the exploration of relationships and the human experience were spot on! His humor is just as fantastic as in his previous stories. And his little pieces of wisdom sprinkled throughout are just awe inspiring. If you’re a fan of his, I highly recommend this book!

This is a complicated book for me to review. The writing is beautiful but at some point, I find it frustrating to constantly being purposely led in one direction with expectations for the next part of the story only for things to take a totally different turn. It’s an interesting approach when used judiciously but this storyline felt like it relied too much on that trope.
