This book was amazing! The only con is that I wanted more. The characters were very well developed. The pacing of the novel started from the first page. The novel was written in dialect that was reflective of the time and it was perfect. Lastly, the storyline was very intriguing.

Trigger Warning: Racial Slurs, Rape, Violence
I absolutely adored this book! I wish I would have known beforehand about the trigger warnings, because parts of it were really difficult to read, but the strength Evvie showed throughout the book was powerful. This book was heartbreaking and empowering at the same time. I typically don't enjoy books with
sad endings,
but all the events that took place in the novel felt right and contributed to the overall feeling of the story. Overall 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Nothing against this book at all! It's so good (what I got to). It's just hard for me to read fantasy in ebook form; I prefer audiobooks. This book doesn't have one so I keep returning to it because I WANT to finish but I just don't have the time to sit and read (also I read all day for school so I don't have the desire to engage books that way on my personal time). I definitely recommend it to YOU though! Go for it!

This is the best book of 2021 so far. It was the black girl magic for me. Evalene Deschamps is 16 and this is the age women in her family come into their magical abilities called Jubilation. Evalene is learning how to navigate the Jim Crowe South and her Jubilation.

I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction but the author wrote such an amazing story. Even though there was magic involved, it added to the story and seemed natural that Evalene could cause weather anomalies or choke a grown man with her mind. The blatant racism makes you mad but as Evalene's grandmother told her, their magic saved them throughout the years. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Evvie lives in the south while Jim Crow still runs rampant. But Evvie has special powers that have been passed down through her family ever since the times of slavery. She will need them.

Sex on page! Often! A bit graphic. It's also creepy. I was not quite prepared for the horror/creep factor. Plus then there is the terror of the white supremacy as well.

Evvie is a great character. I liked her. I did not like the term jubin'. I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did.

This was not what I expected. It was good but it broke my heart.
