I was really into this when it was about humans exploring an alien megastructure and trying to figure out what the hell was going on but that didn't last. Once it became about galactic politics I quickly lost interest. The mildly racist portrayal of Chinese people and weirdly shoehorned-in sex scenes didn't help, either.

I'm not entirely sure I know what happened throughout this. I enjoyed it, but found a bit of the plot too complicated or complex for me to follow.

This book started so strong and would have been a 5 star for me, but the masochism kept getting thicker and thicker as it went on (this guy clearly didn't understand women). On top of that, the story became increasingly convoluted in the second half. Sadly a miss for me.

Only about 100 or so pages into it. This is a second read for me. I originally read it when it first came out. I don't think I finished it, though. I have a vague memory of being bored with it and putting it down in favor of his Forge of God, which really turned it up to 11 in terms of world destruction.
So, I finished it and liked it, despite it getting a bit weird at the end.

I wasn't terribly impressed. It was interesting, though, to read a book set in the far future of 2005 with the Soviet Union still extant.

A challenging and fascinating sci-fi. The first half is brilliant, the second half becomes harder to follow as the science is so beyond my understanding but still equally fascinating.
