This book was very disappointing. I went in expecting this to be the femminst story of the maids, and instead I got slut-shaming and girl hate and perpetuation of misogyny. It would be easy to blame this on it being outdated, but I'm not sure that's even what's to blame. In any case, I think we can leave this in the past.

I've got mixed feelings about this. It was a quick, easy read and it's certainly an interesting take on the story but I was expecting a little bit more depth in terms of the characters. I can see why people love it but in the end it wasn't really my sort of book. I probably should have anticipated that, considering I've never particularly clicked with most of the Margaret Atwood I've read and I don't know that much about Greek mythology. However I was hoping it would work for me because I enjoy retellings.

The most important factor of this book is the style. It is written from the perspective of a Penelope already long dead. It does not shy away from stating that it is coming from a 21st century. Penelope's narrative is interspersed with the Maids' perspectives, giving the illusion of a classic play.
