I saw this one was rec'd by Maz Maddox and read by kirt Graves so I had to give it a whirl and I'm so glad I did. This is how you write an Alpha 🥹 ... If you like scent marking and tender touches this book is for yooooooouuu. The sex scenes are really hot also.

Note it does end on a cliffhanger (Hfn though) and continues into the rest of the series. I've added this review way after I read it using a post I made in a chat so I'm not fleshing out trigger warnings, sorry, just added child abuse bc it starts out with that and I def remembered it.

I love this book đź’ś I love this universe đź©· and I love this author. Kiki is the best.

THE ALPHA AND HIS KING is book one, and sets the stage for an entire series of shifters finding their mates & problem solving a big bad. This universe also branches out into a stand alone (adjacent) and at least book one in another pack's series.

I remember reading this for the first time and being captivated.  From the moment Kai comes out of that shed swinging that rake, I loved him. Rick is the alpha-iest alpha, and all the enforcers and betas serve as constant character dramas and entertainment.

Rick and Kai have killer chemistry.

The scene with Veronica, Drago  & Kai had me not even BLINKING. I didn't want to miss a minute. *it's not a sexy scene, lol so don't even worry*

The family dynamics between Kai, Samantha, Callie, and Henry were amazing. Ms Beth needs to be protected at all costs.

This story is great.
This universe is great.
I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book.

I’m hooked and completely annoyed with myself for having put off starting this series for so long. I’m still relatively new to paranormal/shifter romances, but I’m going to have to start admitting that I’m a fan, especially when they are written by Kiki.

Such an intriguing world was created. Alpha packs, councils, corruption, conspiracy, found family, fated mates, it’s got it all!!

Rick is a fantastic alpha. He’s created a safe haven for so many. He leads with integrity and care. Which is also a lot to carry. What he needs is an alpha-mate to help carry the load and build a life with.

He wasn’t expecting Kai. Kai is the most lovely person ever. His life has been hard, but he’s still kept his compassion and heart. And watching him come into his own, and carve out his space in the world…swoon. And watching his grumpy alpha fall…double swoon.

There’s a lot of action in the story too, which makes this an exhilarating story.

Bonus points for the audiobook, narrated by Kirt Graves. He was perfect for this story and may have been the cause of my work output dropping that day.

I like the world building. Rick the alpha and how he wants protect and love both his mate and pact is sweet. I didn't like that any more descriptions between betas, enforcers, and there is no omegas between the wolves. I till have fun with the book and I'm going to read the next one to see what happens so.

This was great! You could feel the emotional trauma of Kai and his family and balancing the shifter aspect was done very well. I loved all the characters but Kai was my favorite. His learning to trust Rick and fall in love was great. Also, I really hope his witchy friend gets a happily ever after and as butt-kicking as she is meant to be! I look forward to reading more of this pack.

This was my first experience with Kiki Clark and Kirt Graves and I really enjoyed it. Clark has created a really unique world here – shifters but without the typical fated mates aspect, though it’s definitely instant attraction. While each book in the series follows the relationship of a couple giving them an HEA, there’s also a series story arc that runs throughout the books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order.

There’s a lot of world building going on but Clark does a good job of keeping it interesting and I didn’t feel like the pace was affected by it. While Rick & Kai are wolf- shifters – the Kincaid Pack is made up of various animals as well as seers and witches. I’m a fan of books with kids in them and while not exactly a “single dad” trope – Kai’s responsibility for his younger siblings definitely brings all of those feels to the story. I also like that the kids are not just convenient props, Clark has made them an integral and believable aspect.

There are some heavy elements in here such as abuse, violence, and some relationship angst. Tempered by a little bit of humor and new found family. I love the secondary characters as much as the main couple. While Rick and Kai get their HFN, the mystery surrounding attacks on the pack are just revealing themselves to be larger than anyone thinks. I’m definitely looking forward to Keiran & Bennett’s book, The Second and His Bonded.

Narration:
This is my first time listening to a narration by Kirt Graves and I’m absolutely in love with his style and voices. There are a LOT of characters in this book and Graves gives them all unique voices and personalities. My favorite part is that he performs each chapter in a voice corresponding to that character which makes it easy to keep track of perspective. He’s definitely being added to my “find more!” list of narrators.

It was not for me. I did like Kai but Rick was not it. Eventhough the scent marking, mating and so on was not bad, I just didnt see any chemistry between them, especially at the beginning. I also didnt catch their ages, but it was obvious that their is a bigger age gap, especially with Rick calling him pup all the time made it really unconfortable for me. The Power dynamic was also just not it. I will not continue this series, eventhough it ended on a cliffhanger I have no interest finding out what happens next.
