Sometimes I felt like there were too many story lines happening and the involvement of the kids was my least favorite part.

While the writing and the plot was good, I was annoyed by the frequent interjections of the author, jumping ahead and giving things away instead of just foreshadowing within the text.

Tragic story of murder in a small town with beautifully written descriptions, flawed characters, and subplots that don't detract from the main plot.  The unfortunate prejudice of post-WWII Americans is prevalent.  There were so many characters battling their own demons, but they were easy to keep track of since they were so interesting.  A tense mystery with several twists.

I should have loved this book.  And according to Goodreads, many people have.  This book has everything I look for in a literary mystery - compelling themes, interesting characters, dilemmas with no easy solution, etc.  However, I found myself feeling like reading it was a chore.  I can't explain it, and I expect most people to enjoy it.  However, I won't be reading more from this author.

Another beautiful book from William Kent Krueger 🍂
Thank you, Atria Books, for the gifted copy of The River We Remember {partner}

Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆.5

"You and I both know that justice isn't always about what the law dictates."

When I sit down to read Krueger's books, I never feel like I'm reading a book written in the current time/ He has such a talent for taking his readers back in time and bringing the story to life. He does this through vivid descriptions of the land, characters, and their stories. Due to his use of the third person omniscient, the reader is privy to the characters' personal thoughts in Jewel, Minnesota.

With that being said, there are a lot of characters. It took me a while to find my footing and to be able to pinpoint who was related to whom and which story paired with that character. I might've had an easier time with it had I chosen to read the book, but CJ Wilson is such an incredible audiobook narrator I couldn't not choose to listen. But, no matter the format, take your time with the book and get acquainted with all the characters.

One of my favorite aspects of this book were the poignant references to our world, land, and people. So many things struck me and reminded me that we never really own our land and that nature does not have to answer to us.

👥 Complex characters
😍 Vivid descriptions
👌🏼 Well paced
🌳 Respect for nature

❌ rape, domestic abuse, war, torture

I recommend reading The River We Remember if you appreciate the complex characters and storyline from Beartown by Fredrik Backman.

This book was an unexpected surprise. It was deeply reflective and had a nuanced main characters who were flawed and complicated. I am so glad I read it and I look forward to moderating a conversation with the author.
