This book presents a variety of research on the effects of chronic stress on the body in an approachable, understandable way. There were a few issues I had with the book tho:
* Its main point could have been conveyed in a way more succint way. Some sections feel like fillers.
* The stressors the book points out in the research are a whole order of magnitude larger than what your average middle class person encounters in life - no real comparison between being a rat being rattled in a cage, shocked and placed right next to a cat, and having to juggle work life/family life.
* No real recommendations on how to deal with the stress.

This book is simply terrifying.
Your mother was stressed during pregnancy? You will be addicted to drugs!
Your parents didn't hold you in the first months? Death in middle age by stroke!
Are you motivated and strive for perfection? Divorce, depression and guess it, death!
Most self-help books paint a picture of success, that playing with your food will make you a billionaire playboy, flowers and unicorns you get the gist and guess what, of course they don't work! (Well they work for their authors)
You know what works?
Explaining how you will die based on scientific research of the last 2 centuries and why you are doomed based on hard facts!
I am absolutely mortified after finishing this book and will start running daily again because I don't want to die!

It’s very well-written and well-researched, but there’s a lot of physiology. I think I would’ve liked it more reading it rather than listening to the audiobook.
This is rather heavy on the physiology but fascinating none the less. The author makes a good argument for why the poor just can not catch up. He addresses many of the social issues related to the poorer health of the poor, but does not have any serious recommendations to remedy the problems. He does however, offer advice for the individual, recognizing that his advice is actually for the middle class American who can afford to buy his book. The first half scares you that you are killing yourself every time you activate the stress response and the last half shows you how much you can survive in spite of your stress response.
Great example of research that meets practicality with a sense of sitting alongside the author over hot beverages. ☕️
