some ideas i found interesting, other parts droned on and i found myself unable to even concentrate on the book during those chapters. overall feels like a good jumping-off point and had a lot of content to keep in mind, but was also very repetitive and i could’ve just read the chapters that most interested me (i suspect it was designed to be read in that manner). and some of the science seemed rather opinions-based, but i suspect it was well-researched and simply not explained in complete detail

Another banger from sapolsky! Some redundancies from behave. Many things carry over to chronic pain, there is definitely a significant crossover here. The chapter on pain was a little slim.

The book makes light of the sometimes grim subject matter by way of Robert Sapolsky's awesome jokes. He also has a way of explaining sophisticated research so well it seems simple - at times I would've enjoyed more depth, but that's just nitpicking.

The book is well researched (duh) and covers a wide range of subjects - depression, heart disease, voodoo, bereavement, baboons, addiction, being a church member - and how stress ties into these.

Really good book! Might not have been the best option for a global pandemic but Sapolsky was engaging and the topic was very interesting to me. He has a lot about the damage stress (especially chronic psychological stress) can give you but he also had some good stress management information. I listened to this on audio book and it kept my attention very well, which is hard for me normally.

Pretty dense reading, sometimes feeling more like a textbook. Sapolsky examines stress, its causes, and its impacts, from multiple angles. He does a good job of explaining things to non-scientists, however, and his self-effacing humor keeps it light at times. After you finish, you'll forever be asking yourself how glucocorticoids fit into a given situation!
