Interesting account of Dr. Jerri Nielsen's year-long adventure at the South Pole (Antarctica), struggling to survive upon learning she had breast cancer. With total darkness for nine months and no way out, she details every day life, her relationships with the other crew members, and a lot of interesting facts about a little known area. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This is an amazing story of a woman when, finding a lump in her breast, actually operates on herself to remove the cancerous area. She is not alone, physically. She has co-workers, even a connection with home. But she is alone emotionally. Such amazing strength and determination.

I thought this book was really interesting from the point of describing so much of what happens in Antarctica. I liked learning how everything was done and the kinds of concessions they need to make in order to live through winters there. I didn't really care for the protagonist, however. The story was very easy reading and I finished it quite quickly because it was interesting. I enjoyed it a lot more for the information than I did for the human interest aspect of this story.

It was an easy read and I enjoyed it. If you don't have a medical background I don't know if you would be able to enjoy it as much with some of the nuances about the difficulty of treating someone with cancer all the way down at the South Pole. Some of her personality was hard to relate with but overall it was an enjoyable easy read.

I really enjoyed this memoir about the author’s experience as a doctor at the South Pole who gets breast cancer while there in the winter when no transports can come in or out. She has to treat herself with the help of her fellow Polies and was evacuated early in a risky flight mission. I love memoirs and I love arctic/Antarctic adventures, so this was right up my alley. I could also relate to her experience as a breast cancer patient, having been one myself. Good read.
