Wolf shifter romance! The audiobook was a delight to listen to and i enjoyed the story and plot. It was a bit predictable but honestly still fun
Took like 50% in to get good but then I was very invested. Def worth it to get to the second book

I try to have the books I read also on audio so I can get through books faster. This audiobook was perfection. The chapters are not dual POV, but they managed to get Callum’s voice. I may have to listen to everything Shane East narrates. That being said, the book itself has been one of my favorites of the year. I didn’t not want to put it down. Rory, a human princess, is “kidnapped” by a Wolf alpha. She also kinda goes willingly to get away from her awful fiancé that is an arranged marriage. While I loved Callum, I can’t help but love her morally grey frenemy. Will this end up like Tamlin and Rhys? I can’t help but wonder if Blake is actually her mate. I would listen/read this again so it’s 5 stars for me. I can’t wait to read book 2.

For those of you who don’t know me, I have been an avid reader for all my life and have gone through multiple literary phases. One of those phases was a passion for the bodice ripper historical romance from the 80’s/90’s (you know the ones? The harlequin romances with Fabio on the cover and a half dressed woman in the throes of passion? Think Johanna Lindsey, Judith McNaught, Catherine Coulter, Julie Garwood…). Which is why, as I devoured “The Wolf King” in one day, there was a feeling in the back of my mind that I had read something like this before. I still can’t tell you which book it was that I remembered but I can tell you that its familiarity was nostalgic and comforting.
That is not to say, however, that this was not an enjoyable read. I really liked getting to know these new characters, even if they were based on the time honoured trope of the trapped princess and the rogue who kidnaps/rescues her. The author has given the whole a bit of an update by adding some political intrigue and a very morally grey addition to the cast. Plus this story includes werewolves (this is where I said “yes, that’s definitely for me!”) and has some pretty good spice (🌶️🌶️) that does not skip consent. Add to that the feminist subtext and you have a book that I am proud to add to my already groaning bookshelves.
Was it familiar? Yes. Did it have a plot with surprise twists that I didn’t see coming? No. Was it a fun escapist read? YES 🙌.
In other words, this was a read that was easy to get into with just enough political intrigue and questions left at the end of it to have me reaching for the next instalment.
