Wow! This book kept me up at night! It also inspired me to do some research into Mao and Cultural Revolution. I think that's a biggest compliment I can give a book - that it made me want to learn more about the topic. The characters were great, the story was great, the murder toll just kept ticking. My only complaint is that the ending got unnecessarily complicated. Can't wait to read more of this series!

I took forever to read this book - not because it was a slow read but I had way too many things going on in my life these past few weeks. I really enjoy Lisa See's books and wish I had read this one of her Red Princess mysteries first as it established the background and characters. She seems to have a pretty good understanding of life in China and with one of her main characters being American, she is able to nicely show the contrast between the two cultures. I am looking forward to reading the one of this series I have missed. If you are interested in Chinese culture and also like a bit of a mystery, give these books a try.

I really enjoyed this. She really gave a feeling of what life in China is like and I liked having that mixed in with a the action and mystery. Fun read.

Complex investigation by former lovers into Chinese Triad's smuggling of nuclear triggers, illegal immigrants, drugs and bear bile (!), taking place in LA, Beijing, Montana and the Chinese countryside is more complex than interesting, more fraught with melodrama than engaging. It's a disappointment after Dreams of Joy and Shanghai Sisters which were excellent, nuanced stories of the Chinese American experience, particularly for women, drawn from the author's own family.
I don't think I'll be tuning in for the next Red Princess.

This book was not bad.....an average book or perhaps a little better. But not want I've come to expect from Lisa See. I absolutely HATED the ending - a blatant 'cliff hanger' that just falls flat. Would I recommend this book? Maybe, but not enthusiastically.

Nothing is clear

Twists, turns, a little sappy but you will be surprised. No one in this story is what it seems.
