This mystery is flawed but it seemed so well-researched and the history so interesting that I did not mind the plot being somewhat far-fetched and the characters not very fleshed out. I do not know a lot about modern China so it was fascinating to me and makes me want to learn more. Occasionally the mystery is too obviously only a vehicle for the history but I didn't really care. This is the first of a trilogy and I'm looking forward to reading the next two.

Definitely my least favorite of Lisa See's books. I did not think it was particularly well-written, but stuck it through to till the end. A mystery that takes place in both China & California, that is part murder intrigue, part love-story.

After reading "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," I was expecting another epic book and was sorely disappointed. Maybe mystery stories are just not for me?

I felt like this didn't age well.

Maybe I'm bored with serial killers? They're a bit 2000s.

The setting (China), rather than the plot itself, made this mystery a decent read. I enjoyed See's descriptions of city life and the tidbits about China's culture and history. This novel is the first of three Red Princess mysteries.
