Dropped at 12 pages.

Guys, I just can't. I just fucking can't. I got 12 pages into this book bogged down by over the top writing, obnoxious unlikable characters, and so much drama and misery I was practically drowning in it. "The Big Little Lies of YA"? BULL. SHIT. The only thing this has in common with Big Little Lies is that it opens with a murder and the plot travels backwards to find out how it happened and who did it. Which, surprise surprise, is not limited to Big Little Lies. A LOT of thrillers start from the aftermath of a crime and work its way back to when it all began AND those same stories have people who lie in them. So really, this should have been billed as "The Vast Majority of Thrillers, Just with Teenagers".

The characters are insufferable from the get-go. Remy spends the first few pages talking about how Jack is dead and she'll never be able to hold him, touch him, etc. Why we needed several pages to explain this is beyond me, but it speaks to how dramatic Remy was going to be and I have no interest in listening to her for 352 pages. Also, the parents are assholes from the start as well, and while I will admit that the fight between Remy and her mom was realistic given the context, Remy added too many details about their relationship rather than letting the details come to light later or let the reader figure them out on their own.

Basically, in the 12 pages I managed to get through, we had:

1. Overly dramatic and over the top writing.
2. An obnoxious, unlikable, and dramatic main character.
3. Tell Don't Show.
4. A simple, overused premise that can't carry make up for the first 3 points.

That's where I stand. Not going to finish this ever, but since I only made it 12 pages maybe others should check this out, I'm sure the vast majority of people are more tolerant than I am.

This is one of those "I can't tell if this examining toxic friendships" or "purposefully toxic friendship for the luls" books. Either way, not as impacting as I was hoping.

I can’t express the way I feel about this book. This book got me into reading and I would give so much to be able to read it for the first time again. This was a reread. I annotated it this time and I might have highlighted more parts of the book than I left empty

This book was so intense. The bond that Remy and Elise had was to the next level of extreme. These two girls met one day by chance and ever since both of their lives have not been the same. They were beyond protective of each other. This book could trigger some emotions… it was on the heavier side. Lots of violence and abuse going on. This was a very toxic relationship type of book … be warned.
